Every now and then, when I come across a vintage Harley like this WR Flat-Tracker, I stop for a moment and wonder what the hell Harley-Davidson was thinking with their motorcycle lineup in the past 75-odd years.

1946 was the year Harley introduced the WR-45 Flat-Head, it was an immensely successful motorcycle, mostly being used for Flat-Track and dirt oval racing in the USA.

The Harley-Davidson WR was created as an answer to the successful Indian Scout that dominated the tracks of 1930’s America. It was a race-ready machine, with no road equipment to remove, a lighter frame, and a robust and reliable engine capable of 100 MPH.

By 1948, the WR-45 had won 19 of 23 National Championship races across America, including seven out of the top ten places at Daytona. This unprecedented winning streak established the WR-45 as one of the most renowned dirt track racing motorcycles in history.

Hell, even Jay Leno has one.
