Dean was Walt’s boy and he grew up playing in these old cars. Walt had no idea the passion he had instilled in his child but Dean’s love for cars went far beyond the parts Walt had piled. So for Walt’s son he was going to make it big someday, it all started in 1931 it we would become known as Old Car City USA. In 2009 owner Dean Lewis realized he could turn it into a tourist attraction because a lot of people shared his love of decomposing automotive carcasses.

Most of Old Car City is in a forest. All of the cars – over 4200 of them – are at least 40 years old (“Before they started making cars out of plastic,” said Dean); some are even older than Dean, and he was born in 1937.

Cars date back as far as a 1918 Buick. A few in the 1920’s, more in the 1930s, and many more in the 1940s through 1972. The collection includes Packards, Desotos, Studebakers, Kaisers, Hudsons, Fords, Edsels, Mercurys, Lincolns, Chevrolets, Pontiacs, Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Cadillacs, Plymouths, Doges, Chryslers, Nashes and a few foreign cars.

In the 30 or 40 years that many of the cars have never moved, trees now grow through them and, in some cases, even lift them off the ground. They are a piece of history in their final resting place, retired to live out the days in peace with the sounds of birds chirping and leaves dropping.
