Satanic Dodge Is Unveiled – 2018 Challenger SRT Demon Is An 840 HP BEAST!

- in Cars

The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is designed for one thing: dominating the quarter mile. It’s got 840 horses, can hit 60 miles per hour in 2.3 seconds pulling 1.8 G’s, and hits the quarter-mile in 9.65 at more than 140 mph.
The Demon has arrived!

Dodge has let SRT’s engineers completely off the chain, freeing them to create the certifiably insane Challenger SRT Demon that’s just debuted at a star-studded event ahead of the New York Auto Show.

The SRT Demon may look just like another Challenger Hellcat widebody conversion, but it’s something infinitely more focused and primal. This is a street-legal muscle car, but Demon is not really meant to be merely driven, it exists to race.

Demons ship with four Nitto NT05R drag radials in size 315/40R-18 tucked under blistered fenders that widen the car by 3.5 inches. The idea is that, with all the crate bits installed, one can drive to a drag strip on the barely legal street rubber and, with the runners in place, have two sets of rear tires at one’s disposal.

Tim Kuniskis, head of Fiat Chrysler’s NAFTA passenger cars, admits that the company wanted to go in a different direction than the Challenger’s obvious competition. By fixating on a single goal, Kuniskis and company claim to have destroyed not only crosstown rivals but all competition in quarter-mile races. “Demon isn’t an incremental change to an existing vehicle,” Kuniskis said. “It would have been easy to take a Hellcat and make it faster. But we didn’t want to do that,” he said.

A 0-60 time is the ultimate measure of a vehicle’s acceleration, and the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon delivers the fastest acceleration of any production car. Designed explicitly for drag racing, the Demon is the first street-legal production car that can lift its front wheels off the ground under hard acceleration.

6.2-liter supercharged V8 has 840 horsepower and 770 pound-feet of torque. It’ll hit 60 mph in 2.3 seconds, 100 mph in 5.1 seconds and blitz the quarter-mile lights in 9.65 seconds at 140 mph.

That’s quick enough that the NHRA says “no, thank you” unless the Demon’s owner installs items like a roll cage and racing harness. The SRT Demon is so fast at the strip that it’s actually been banned by the National Hot Rod Association.

Dodge will build only 3000 Demons for the U.S. market, and 300 for Canada, in the 2018 model year. Production begins in late summer, with delivery to dealerships taking place this fall.
